Facility for production of steel drums and reinforced concrete containers for radio active waste storage of Chernobyl NPP was opened in Slavutich, Kiev region.The corporation Ukrtransbud is a General contractor for construction.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations the opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Emergency Situations of Ukraine Viktor Baloga, head of the European Commission to Ukraine, Ambassador of the European Commission to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira and Chairman of the State Agency for Management of Exclusion Zone Vladimir Kholosha
Honored guests inspected facilities ready for the launch of the complex and familiarized with the main stages of the manufacturing process of containers. V. Baloga thanked the Ambassador of the European Commission for their cooperationand noted that construction of the facility was financed and executed by European Commission within "TACIS nuclear safety program."
-I want in the person of Mr. Ambassador Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira to thank the European Commission for assistance in the eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. Containers, which will produce the complex, will safely store radioactive waste for a period of 30 to 100 years - said the Minister of Emergency Situations
In turn, P. Teixeira highlighted the uniqueness of this facility. "This project is a concrete result of cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union to raise the level of nuclear safety . This unique case that overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, capacity are creates with the help of the European Union, which will work not only to overcome the consequences and problems that exist at the Chernobyl station. This production will solve and other issues related to nuclear power and safety in Ukraine, and possibly abroad, "- he said.
